While another year of parachute payments will provide valuable financial support, missing out on the top flight leaves the Saints vulnerable to interest in some of their most important players. A number of standout performers were part of Tonda Eckert's unstoppable unit for the latter have of the 2025/26 campaign.

Of course, that is unlikely to have gone unnoticed by clubs operating at a higher level. In fact, some of the most recently promoted Premier League sides are emerging as genuine threats.

Leeds United, who effectively traded places with Southampton following their promotion in 2025, have already been linked with players capable of strengthening their squad and ensuring survival.

For Southampton, losing key figures will be damaging from a footballing perspective and make another promotion push more difficult.

The challenge for the club will be balancing the financial benefits of player sales with the need to retain enough quality to compete at the top end of a fiercely competitive Championship.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Finn Azaz, Leo Scienza, and Caspar Jander are all names that stand out as players that Southampton may struggle to keep hold of, but Shea Charles is another player interesting Premier League clubs.

Charles' rise at Southampton has been an impressive one since joining from Manchester City in a deal worth around £10.5 million initially in 2023. Per Sky Sports, that had the potential to rise to £15 million.

Initially, the Northern Ireland international was used in a variety of roles, including various midfield positions and in the centre of defence, as he adapted to senior football and life at St Mary's. A successful loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday proved to be a turning point, allowing him to play regularly and develop his game in the Championship.

Since returning to Southampton, Charles has established himself as a key figure, becoming one of the club's most reliable and influential performers thanks to his composure, versatility, his power and athleticism, as well as his intelligence both in and out of possession.

, but there is other Premier League interest beyond that this summer. Leeds United have since been linked to Charles in the last week.

It's since been revealed that Leeds have firmed up their interest by submitting a bid for the versatile midfielder, with Simon Jones of The Daily Mail stating that they have made an offer over £20 million to Southampton for the 22-year-old.

Selling Shea Charles before July makes sense for Southampton

With Leeds' interest in Charles firming up, Southampton may have additional motivation to conclude any deal before July.

Clubs are often conscious of accounting deadlines and Profit and Sustainability regulations, with player sales completed before the end of a financial reporting period able to have an immediate impact on the books.

Given Charles was signed for around £10.5 million and has significantly enhanced his value since then, a sale would likely generate a healthy profit if it is "20 million plus", as Jones reports.

While Southampton would ideally prefer to retain one of their key players, the financial benefits of banking a substantial fee before a new accounting period begins could make any serious offer increasingly difficult to ignore.

Of course, Squad Cost Ratio will come into effect soon, but a sale would benefit Southampton now.

It would also provide Southampton with valuable clarity early in the window. Securing a sale now would give the club more time to identify and recruit a replacement before pre-season, allowing any new arrival to settle quickly and integrate into the squad ahead of the new campaign.
