Ralph Hassenhuttl struck transfer gold at Southampton by taking advantage of a Chelsea decision, which ended up being a big mistake for the PL side...

Recruitment at any level often revolves around timing, opportunity, but also a willingness to trust potential — which was something Southampton often did well under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

In fact, one particular deal for Southampton perfectly captured that idea, as they capitalised on a situation that arguably should never have been available to them in the first place. It involved Chelsea, who had a number of players that they were not utilising much at the time.

Many of them required a fresh start or increased opportunity elsewhere. Meanwhile, the Saints were looking to refresh their squad with younger profiles capable of adapting to what was then an intense, high-pressing system.

The market can be difficult to navigate for clubs outside the traditional elite, but there is often value to be found in academy systems where pathways are blocked. When one such opportunity arose involving a highly-rated full-back, Southampton acted quickly to secure an excellent deal for the club.

Tino Livramento was a fantastic piece of business for Southampton

Tino Livramento could be on his way out of Southampton

The move for Tino Livramento would quickly prove to be an inspired one. Despite limited senior exposure at Stamford Bridge, Livramento arrived with a glowing reputation from Cobham, and he wasted little time showcasing why.

Prior to a serious injury to his ACL in April 2022, Livramento was one of the most exciting full-backs in the country. He was dynamic, fearless in possession, and appeared to be defensively assured beyond his years. He became a standout performer almost immediately.'

His ability to carry the ball upfield, engage opponents one-on-one, and to contribute at both ends of the pitch made him a perfect fit for Hasenhuttl’s system. While that injury would later disrupt his momentum, there was no denying the impact he made when fit.

Crucially, Southampton would go on to secure a significant profit on the defender after relegation, underlining the deal as a clear success both on and off the pitch. Had he been fit, they may well have survived; but even after injuries, Livramento's reputation saw Newcastle United pay out close to £40 million for him (BBC Sport).

From Chelsea’s perspective, it’s a decision that may prompt some reflection. Livramento’s departure, alongside that of Lewis Hall a few years later, represents a missed opportunity to integrate two highly talented full-backs into their long-term plans.

Both from Cobham, both possessed the technical quality and versatility to thrive at the highest level. And yet, pathways were not sufficiently cleared for them to make the impact many would have hoped for in West London.

How big of a miss to Chelsea Tino Livramento is

Since joining Newcastle from Southampton, Livramento has steadily re-established himself as one of the Premier League’s outstanding full-backs. Under Eddie Howe, he has been trusted within a high-intensity system that places emphasis on the running power and efficiency of the full-backs.

Despite that knee concern, his athleticism and ball-carrying ability have made him a vital outlet for Newcastle in wide areas, while his defensive positioning continues to improve. He and Hall are showing Chelsea what they are missing in many ways, with Livramento capable of featuring at both left-back and right-back.

It's honestly what makes the situation with Livramento particularly intriguing, given how Chelsea have had to watch on as his partnership with fellow Cobham graduate Hall has developed. Together, they offer balance, energy, quality, and technical security on either flank.

They form a modern full-back pairing capable of influencing all phases of play. Both are now recognised at international level with England, underlining their development but also what could have been at their academy club. It’s a scenario that inevitably raises the question of what might have been for Chelsea, but teams will continue to take advantage of Cobham for now.
