Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 on Friday, Baena pouncing after Muslera’s handling error on 42 minutes. Lamine Yamal found little joy against a rugged defence.
According to L'Équipe, Yamal disappointed and Muslera endured a poor night, with Sanabria and Olivera Uruguay’s standouts. D. Nunez was flagged offside on 12 minutes, then Bentancur could not release him on 17. Muslera flapped at an inswinging corner on 20 and Yamal’s screen freed Llorente to cross on 23.
Nunez’s lay-off found no team-mate on 27, then he crossed at the keeper on 29. Baena’s swivel shot slipped through Muslera on 42 and the veteran was replaced at half-time by Rochet.
Sanabria was booked on 54 minutes and withdrawn as a precaution. Merino made way for Olmo on the hour, Valverde also departing, and Olmo volleyed over on 62. Yamal was replaced by N. Williams on 76, Olivera forced Simon into Uruguay’s only save on 83 and Ferran Torres hit the bar on 87 after escaping Olivera, before Uruguayan penalty appeals against Olmo at 90+2 were waved away.
Rodri set the tempo from deep, amassing 118 touches. Valverde could not impose himself high up the pitch. D. Nunez grafted but never looked like scoring.
