Spain and Belgium’s World Cup 2026 quarter-final began with a minute’s silence for victims of the Los Gallardos wildfire in Almería. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the tribute took place before kick-off.

The blaze, declared on Thursday, has a provisional toll of 12 dead and at least 23 missing, making it among the most lethal in Spain in recent decades.

Most of those who died are foreign nationals, several of them British, caught in residential and tourist areas around Los Gallardos and the nearby hamlet of Bédar.

Early investigations suggest the fire could have started after a power line cable fell. High temperatures near 40C and strong winds fuelled an extremely rapid spread.

Several people were trapped during evacuations, while others died as they tried to escape the flames.
