Seismic sensors across Spain registered tremors as fans celebrated Spain’s 1-0 after extra time World Cup final win over Argentina in New York on Sunday, with the strongest vibrations at the final whistle.

According to L'Équipe, Spanish seismologist Jordi Diaz Cusi posted data on X showing sharp spikes in seismic activity across several cities during the match.

The sensors detected three distinct peaks. The first came after Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, then another followed a second effort that was later ruled out after video review in the 112th minute. The final whistle produced the largest tremor.

Scientists said the readings reflect induced seismicity, a human-driven phenomenon that occurs when thousands of supporters jump, shout and celebrate at the same time.

Similar jolts were recorded during Spain’s Euro 2024 final win over England, and in the World Cup semi-final against France, which La Roja won 2-0.
