Spain and Athletic Club star Nico Williams has released a heartfelt message across his social media platforms on Sunday.
This comes after the attacker suffered yet another setback in his efforts to recover full fitness.
The Spanish national team were of course back in action this weekend, locking horns with Uruguay as part of the final round of group stage fixtures.
When all was said and done, Luis de la Fuente’s troops emerged on the right side of a 1-0 result, to advance as group winners, and set up a knockout round clash with Austria.
Along the way, however, Spain were dealt not one, but two blows on the personnel front.
Wingers Yéremy Pino and Nico Williams were both forced into premature departures from proceedings owing to fitness complaints.
The latter picked up a muscular injury which could keep him on the sidelines for several weeks.
With the realisation having in turn set in that he may not be fit to feature again at this summer’s World Cup, Nico on Sunday therefore took to his official ‘X’ account, to unveil the following emotional post:
‘Today is one of the worst days of my life. I’ve gotten injured again after a very tough year, one in which the pubic symphysis pain won many battles against me, but not the war. I managed to overcome it with hard work, sacrifice, and above all, responsibility. It was a year and a half of suffering, sadness, uncertainty, and anxiety. I didn’t know when I’d be able to play without pain again or when I’d get back to a normal life. I even got to the point of living with the pain in things as simple as going to the bathroom, getting in and out of the car, or just enjoying day-to-day life. Getting back to being happy playing soccer was my top priority, along with recovering my smile. Because without a smile, without enjoying it and without being happy, I can’t perform at the highest level. I overcame it. Then came a hamstring injury that put me to the test once more. I stopped smiling again, but I wasn’t going to let it stop me either. Yesterday, I was caused a new injury after an action in which a fellow professional acted out of frustration, discontent, and sadness over the situation he was going through. It was a play that, in my opinion, could have been avoided because it was completely unnecessary. But this won’t stop me either. I know God has a plan for me, and I’ll keep fighting until the very last moment to get back to doing what I love most: playing soccer, being happy, and bringing joy to many. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your messages of support. The story isn’t over—we’ll see each other as soon as possible in this World Cup.’
