Spain suffer double injury blow after Uruguay win with star ruled out of World Cup | OneFootball

Spain fear forward Yeremy Pino’s World Cup is over after the Crystal Palace attacker suffered a suspected broken collarbone during the 1-0 win over Uruguay.

Pino was a second-half substitute for Spain, coming on in the 65th minute, but was injured when he landed awkwardly on his left shoulder in the closing stages of the match.

Pino stayed on for the remainder of the game, but head coach Luis de la Fuente said a broken collarbone would almost certainly rule the 23-year-old out of the World Cup.

Spain will play either Austria or Algeria in the last-32 in Los Angeles on July 2, but one of the favourites for the World Cup may also be without forward Nico Williams for the remainder of the tournament.

Williams, who came into the World Cup nursing an injury, appeared to suffer a groin injury after coming on in the 75th minute. The winger was later seen limping after full-time.

Williams, a key player for Spain during their Euro 2024 triumph, has not started a game so far at the World Cup, while star Lamine Yamal’s minutes have been limited following his return from a hamstring injury.

Yamal played 75 minutes against Uruguay, having made his first start of the tournament in the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in their second match, and if either Pino or Williams are ruled out for the rest of the World Cup it would be a further strain to Spain’s attack.

“Pino can miss the rest of the World Cup,” De la Fuente said at his post-match press conference. “It is a collarbone injury. We will do more scans tomorrow. He was suffering a lot, it was heroic that he helped us until the end of the game.”

Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay ensured they topped Group H, with Cape Verde - who held Spain to a 0-0 draw - stunning the World Cup by finishing as runners-up.
