Spain’s golden century was gilded on Sunday in New York as Luis de la Fuente’s men won the World Cup. The victory makes Spain simultaneous men’s and women’s world champions and the first men’s team holding world, European and Olympic titles. Superdeporte notes no European nation has matched it.

Before 2000, Spain had one European Championship, nine European Cups and one Ballon d’Or, all by men. Since then, their clubs and internationals have amassed three World Cups, three European Championships, 15 Champions League titles and six Ballons d’Or.

The men’s side have lifted the World Cup in 2010 and 2026, and the Euros in 2008, 2012 and 2024. That is half of the last 10 flagship tournaments, and no other men’s team have won two World Cups this century.

Barcelona have won five Champions Leagues and Real Madrid six this century, plus Madrid in 1998 and 2000. Spaniards are clinical in finals, Valencia’s 2001 defeat and Atlético’s two losses to Madrid aside.

Barcelona’s women have four Champions Leagues in six years. Ballons d’Or this century lean Spanish, with Aitana Bonmatí on three, Alexia Putellas on two and Rodrigo Hernández winning in 2024. He could repeat this year.

Youth development has underpinned the rise. Former youth coach Santi Denia cites investment in facilities, stronger academies and better trained coaches. The men’s youth teams have 18 titles and the women 16 this century. Spain’s overall international haul stands at 67, with Germany on 46.
