Spanish press say football can be fair as La Roja lift World Cup | OneFootball

Spain claimed a second World Cup star on Sunday night with a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina. According to L'Équipe, Monday’s Spanish papers hailed the collective performance and contrasted it with the Albiceleste’s poor impression.

Newsstands saw queues as fans snapped up souvenir editions, many front pages adding a second star to their logos. Madrid daily Marca enlarged its front page to broadsheet size and splashed “Superestrellas”, calling Spain’s display a lesson for Argentina.

Editor Juan Ignacio Gallardo argued football can sometimes deliver justice, and he lambasted Argentina’s approach as negative, edgy and designed to provoke.

AS declared that Spain and football both prevailed. It highlighted Luis de la Fuente’s work, with José Félix Díaz contending the coach effectively created Ferran Torres’s winner by trusting him as first change, and noted the unprecedented feat of the men’s and women’s sides being world champions at the same time.

In Catalonia, Mundo Deportivo headlined “¡Bicampeones!”, said Argentina could not provide Lionel Messi with a glorious farewell and pictured his tears. It cited Torres’s belief that reward comes to those who deserve it most, and reported Barcelona, like the rest of Spain, celebrated the historic night.

Basque paper El Correo called it the triumph of a winning group in which everyone contributed, and reported attacks and insults by radicals in Vitoria and Bilbao towards Spain supporters. ABC spoke of an invincible Spain and likened Argentina to an Atlético-style albiceleste. El Mundo placed La Roja on top of the world, relaying Torres’s line that the goal belonged to 47 million Spaniards.
