It is no secret that players across the globe dream of donning Real Madrid’s evergreen white jersey at some point in their career with the club largely considered the epitome of the sport.

Over the years, it has become common for one to hear of players sharing stories of their collapsed move to the club, the immense pressure on their shoulders if they did secure the move, and even their dream to join the club.

What is rare, however, is for one to hear a statement that a player turned down a chance to sign for the Spanish giants, especially after having all details agreed upon.

In a recent interview, former AC Milan and Liverpool star Jesus Joaquin Fernandez – popularly known as Suso – revealed that he was very close to signing for Real Madrid early in his career but that he eventually did not do so.

Speaking in the media interaction, Suso revealed the factor that led to his decision to change destination early in his career.

“I had practically everything done with Real Madrid,” he said, revealing his proximity to Los Blancos.

Elaborating on why he chose to sign for Liverpool in the end, the player attributed it to the culture in England and how he always wanted to experience that environment.

“I wanted to go there for the culture, for the Premier League and because it was Liverpool. For me, it was something different.”

“There was always time to go to Spain,” he added, and fittingly so as he now plays for Cadiz.

Over his long career, the 31-year-old has represented not only AC Milan and Liverpool but also Genoa, Sevilla and Almeria.

His best years came in Italy where he shone as a starter for the Rossoneri between 2014 to 2020 albeit with a few loan stints interspersed.

Having left Sevilla last summer, Suso is now back at Cadiz – his boyhood club – in the Spanish second division.
