Tottenham delivered one of their strongest performances of the season but were unable to complete a dramatic comeback, beating Atlético de Madrid 3-2 on the night while exiting the Champions League 7-5 on aggregate.
Spurs played with intensity from the start and were rewarded midway through the first half. Mathys Tel was heavily involved, whipping in a precise cross that Randal Kolo Muani powered home to give the hosts hope.
The home side looked sharp and confident, with Tel continuing to trouble Atletico’s defence throughout the opening period.
However, the tie swung early in the second half. Julian Alvarez struck just two minutes after the restart, finishing clinically to halt Tottenham’s momentum and restore Atletico’s control.
Spurs responded quickly through Xavi Simons, who curled in a fine effort to keep the pressure on.
Any realistic hopes of a comeback were ended when David Hancko headed in from a corner with 15 minutes remaining, stretching the aggregate gap once again. Simons added a late penalty to secure a deserved win on the night, but it was not enough to force extra time.
Despite the exit, the performance offered encouragement for Igor Tudor, who will now turn his focus to Tottenham’s Premier League relegation battle.
