According to a recent report from Paris based media outlet RMC Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are one of three Premier League clubs to have shortlisted Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo as a transfer target.

So far this season, he has been one of the best players in the Premier League. In 21 games, the 25-year old has scored 13 goals, provided three assists, and created ten big chances. One of his goals came against Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though Ange's side turned it around to win the game 3-1.

In the summer, there was plenty of talk around Ivan Toney leaving the club for the Saudi Pro League, and how Brentford would cope in his absence. The biggest compliment you can pay to Mbeumo is that you sometimes forget that Toney left the club - such has been the quality of their attack since then.

All of these numbers come despite not being a striker. Whilst he has played as a split striker alongside Yoane Wissa, Mbeumo mostly plays off the right hand side, and has consistently delivered goals, assists, and general excellent performances whilst playing there.

The signing of the Cameroon international is perhaps the best example of Brentford's obscure yet superb recruitment. Back in the summer of 2019, the forward was signed from French club Troyes for a fee of £5.7 million, whilst they were still a Championship side. That season, he formed a formidable front three alongside Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma - as they lost in the play-off final.

However, the next season, Brentford would secure promotion, with Mbeumo and Watkins' replacement - Toney - two big factors into getting them over the line, this time winning the play-off final against Swansea City.

During the club's time in the Premier League, Mbeumo has shown linear progression, improving year on year, and as good as Brentford are - it feels like even if not this month, the summer is almost surely the time for the next step in his career. He is at a good, upwardly mobile club, but he could play for a number of teams that play in European competition.

He would hugely improve Spurs' side. Whilst Brennan Johnson is a productive player numbers wise, Mbeumo is even better on that front, and his general game is also better than the Welshman's. The only thing to say is that, whilst he is an agile and dynamic player, 1v1 is not his speciality, and that is something that Spurs definitely need.

It would also be interesting to see how he adapts to playing in a side that have a lot more settled possession, and coming up against low blocks. Nevertheless, the pros do outweigh the potential cons, and this would definitely be a good signing.
