Spurs have reportedly entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.
The midfielder, who joined the Magpies from AC Milan for a reported fee of around €70 million in 2023, was one of Eddie Howe’s key players last season, starting 31 games in the Premier League.
The Italy international has attracted interest from a number of top clubs this summer, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United, although the Manchester clubs are said to be prioritising other targets.
According to Sky Sports News, Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has made Tonali a “top target” for this summer, though it would take a “huge fee” to sign him.
The Athletic claim that Tottenham have held “positive talks” with the player’s camp over a potential move, but are yet to make contact with Newcastle.
Spurs are looking to make a “statement signing” ahead of next season, and their approach for Tonali is “driven” by De Zerbi and “backed” by the club’s ownership. They are without a sporting director after Fabio Paratici left to join Fiorentina at the end of the season.
Tonali is contracted to Newcastle until 2029 and, per Sky Sports, the Tyneside outfit “do not want to lose him”. His contract does not include a release clause, putting the club in a strong position to demand a massive transfer fee.
The midfielder market is set to be highly expensive this summer, with Nottingham Forest demanding over £100 million for Manchester City target Elliot Anderson, while West Ham United want around £80 million for Mateus Fernandes.
