Steve Nickson to join Wrexham as sporting director | OneFootball

Wrexham will appoint Steve Nickson as sporting director, in a newly created role that signals their intent after finishing seventh in the Championship.

According to NY Times, Newcastle United’s head of recruitment will depart on 2 September after 15 years at St James’ Park.

Viewed as a coup amid interest from West Ham United and Birmingham City, he will bolster Phil Parkinson’s recruitment set-up, which includes assistant Steve Parkin and chief scout Chris Johnson, for owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Nickson is expected to deepen the club’s overseas reach. Liberato Cacace was the first overseas signing of the Hollywood era last summer, January interest in Sidiki Cherif ended with the striker joining Fenerbahce of Türkiye, and Fiorentina’s Matias Moreno is among defenders under consideration.

At Newcastle since 2017, spanning the Mike Ashley and Public Investment Fund eras, Nickson helped land Joelinton, Ayoze Perez and Sven Botman, and drove youth deals for Antonio Cordero and Vakhtang Salia.

His arrival aligns with a push to raise transfer income as the Championship shifts to a squad cost ratio model. Day-to-day duties will be set out on 2 September, with no sweeping overhaul expected. Plans for a new first-team building at Colliers Park include an office marked for a director of football that will be his.
