Steven Nzonzi has made a surprise return to English football by re-joining Stoke City on a one-year deal.
The midfielder was previously at the club for three seasons from 2012 to 2015 in which he played 120 games for the Potters, scoring seven goals.
After leaving Stoke, Nzonzi went on to win the Europa League with Sevilla before spending time at Roma, Galatasaray, and Rennes. The Frenchman then went to play football in Qatar as well as most recently in Iran with Sepahan.
"For me, it feels like I have come back home," Nzonzi said on his return. "I have played football for some huge clubs in my career, but the best relationship I had with supporters was at Stoke City.
"I was always very grateful for that, as I am to Jon Walters for everything he has done to make this move happen. It gives me huge motivation to help the Club be successful this season.
"It’s important now, however, not to look back too much, but instead to look forward. I will, of course, be a different player to ten years ago, but I know I have lots to give to the team.
"To be ready and conditioned for Championship football, I need to complete my own pre-season. Once that is done, I can’t wait to play in-front of the Stoke City fans again."
Stoke have confirmed that 36-year-old Nzonzi will be unlikely to play this month as he rebuilds his fitness before making his return.
