Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard says Mohamed Salah will ultimately regret his explosive interview following the 3-3 draw at Leeds United in December.
The Egyptian made stunning comments after being dropped to the bench at Elland Road.
He accused the club of ‘throwing him under the bus’ and said his relationship with manager Arne Slot had collapsed.
Salah’s explosive interview triggered speculation of an exit, but a move didn’t materialise.
However, the forward announced last month he will leave the Merseyside club in the summer after agreeing to end his contract a year early.
Gerrard believes Salah will ultimately regret his bombshell interview that damaged his reputation.
Asked if he was shocked by the 33-year-old’s imminent departure, Gerrard said: “No, not at all. I think it’s in everyone’s best interests now. I think the timing’s right.
“He’s obviously had a disagreement with the manager. I don’t know at what level.
“He’s done the interview, which I think he’ll regret further down the line. But that told that there was an issue there.”
Salah will depart as one of the most successful players in Liverpool’s modern history.
He has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, helping the Reds win two Premier League titles and a Champions League.
After a hugely underwhelming 2025/26 season, Salah will leave the club this summer. Al-Ittihad are reportedly leading the race to sign him.
Major League Soccer (MLS) is also an option for the Egyptian international, where Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Heung-min Son are already playing.
