Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has told his former club in no uncertain terms what they must do to replace Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian superstar sent shockwaves through the footballing world on Tuesday night by officially announcing his departure from Anfield at the end of the current season, marking the conclusion of one of the most prolific eras in the club’s storied history.

As the post-Salah era looms, speculations have begun regarding who can replace the world-class winger.

However, Gerrard believes there is no room for projects or ‘players with potential’ signings.

Speaking to TNT Sport, the former Reds captain insisted that unless Liverpool secures a genuine global superstar, the void left by Salah will remain unplugged.

Gerrard: Liverpool must sign a top three winger

Gerrard’s assessment of the situation is blunt. To him, the replacement must carry the same “box office” weight that Salah has wielded since 2017.

“You have to buy someone who is box office or you are not replacing him,” Gerrard said.

“They have to be top end, top three or four wingers in the world to replace Mo Salah, because that’s what Mo has been.”

For Gerrard, Liverpool’s immediate priority must be an established, world-class talent capable of delivering elite output from day one.

Salah’s world-class numbers highlight impossible task

The anxiety surrounding Salah’s exit is rooted in cold, hard data. Since arriving on Merseyside, Salah has maintained a level of consistency rarely seen in the Premier League.

With well over 200 goals and a trophy cabinet featuring every major honor, he has been the primary engine of Liverpool’s attack for nearly a decade.

Replacing a player who provides 30-plus goal contributions season after season is a daunting financial and scouting challenge.

Gerrard’s warning serves as a reminder that good ‘will’ not be enough to sustain Liverpool’s title-challenging ambitions.

To maintain their status at the summit of European football, the Reds’ hierarchy must now prepare to break the bank for a talent that matches Salah’s ‘box office’ DNA.
