Stewart Donald responded to fellow Sunderland owner Juan Sartori after the superb comeback win at Everton kept the club’s European bid alive.
Sunderland trailed but struck after the break through Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fée and Wilson Isidor, keeping Régis Le Bris’ side in contention. According to Sunderland Echo, Sartori was at Hill Dickinson Stadium and posted on social media alongside a photo with his daughter.
He praised the team for fighting to the end and called it one to remember with Sasha. Donald replied that Europe might be possible, said he was pleased for Sartori and hoped to catch up soon, adding a flexed-arm and OK-hand emoji.
The exchange was notable given their shared history. Donald fronted the 2018 consortium that bought the club from Ellis Short after relegation to League One, with Sartori joining alongside Charlie Methven.
Donald later sold his majority shareholding. Kyril Louis-Dreyfus became chairman and majority shareholder in 2021, with Sartori remaining part of the club’s current ownership.
Sartori has been connected to contrasting eras, from the League One struggles to promotion back to the Championship, a Wembley play-off win and now an impressive first Premier League season. Donald’s tenure remains divisive among supporters.
Attention now turns to the final day against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland must win and hope other results fall their way, with Brentford facing Liverpool and Brighton playing Manchester United.
