It’s time for a Monday morning dissection of one of the most painful Chelsea incidents we’ve had in a while – the red card for Nicolas Jackson in yesterday’s defeat to Newcastle which effectively cost us any chance of winning the game – and potentially cost us a chance of getting into the Champions League too, given he will now be suspended for our remaining league fixtures.

Stupid, selfish Jackson let his team down

On the London is Blue podcast, their conclusions were much the same as ours – we like you Nico, but this is something that is hard to excuse.

“It just can’t happen. The occasion, the situation on the day, the opportunity that you have to put your team in a great position to play Champions League football – and you basically make the game unwinnable for the team. Down to ten men, playing with ten men for 65 plus minutes. It was selfish. It was stupid,” said presenter Nick Verlaney.

You can see them discuss the incident in the clip embedded here:

Another moment of madness from Jackson may lead to question about his future

“I really do think that on his day he is a special talent, and has a ton of potential, that could be a great player for Chelsea. He likes to get in the mix, he’s a little Rudiger-esque for me, just on the edge, but never quite past it. So I want to give him a little bit of benefit of the doubt. We’ve seen these moments before, when a player does something catastrophic, that might change their whole trajectory at this club.”

It’s not clear if he’s saying this will change the trajectory of Jackson’s career at Chelsea in terms of him mending his ways and growing up, or those upstairs deciding he’s not reliable enough to be a key player for us. Either way, we agree this is probably a turning point.
