Niklas Süle thanked coach Niko Kovac after being handed a final cameo at Signal Iduna Park in front of the Yellow Wall. According to BuLi News, he expressed his gratitude following the brief appearance.
Returning from a knee injury, Süle made his 300th Bundesliga appearance in his last outing at the stadium. The five-time Bundesliga champion will retire at the end of the season.
He said he was incredibly happy and that being given a few minutes again was very nice. He admitted the treatment he received was uncommon, that expectations had been different, and that it had not worked out for various reasons.
The former Bayern Munich centre-back made 110 appearances for the Black and Yellows across four seasons.
After the match, Kovac said he had asked referee Patrick Ittrich to delay the final whistle so he could bring Süle on. He said Süle deserved the moment and had enjoyed a fine career, noting the defender would golf a lot and probably travel the world. Ittrich will also retire at the end of the season.
