Sunderland have issued an update to supporters after 65 tickets for the recent Tyne-Wear derby were cancelled and put back on sale.
The club said in a statement that it had acted over an exceptional and serious case of ticket misuse, involving unauthorised use of supporter accounts and tickets being used by people other than the eligible purchaser. It found this represented more than 50% of some group purchases.
When the cancellations were made, Sunderland explained they related to a supporter found in breach of away ticketing rules. The move prompted several fan groups to seek further dialogue and clarification.
The update acknowledges that some fans were affected through no fault of their own. Those involved have admitted misuse and the club has taken appropriate action.
Supporter group the Red and White Army shared the update on social media on Tuesday afternoon. The club will continue to work with the ticketing supporter subgroup to review and improve processes so away tickets are distributed fairly and only to genuine supporters.
