Sunderland have issued an update to supporters after 65 tickets for the recent Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle were cancelled and put back on sale, prompting concern from fan groups.
The club said in a statement that an investigation uncovered a serious instance of ticket misuse, including unauthorised use of supporter accounts without the holders’ knowledge and tickets being used by people other than the eligible purchaser. It said those involved had acknowledged the misuse and that appropriate action had been taken, while also recognising some fans were affected through no fault of their own.
The inquiry indicated the irregularities covered over 50% of certain group purchases. The club plans to work with the ticketing supporter subgroup to review and improve processes so away allocations go only to genuine supporters.
The Red and White Army, which relayed the update on social media, had approached the club for clarification after fans raised concerns about the cancellations. At the time of the relisting, the cancellations were attributed to a breach of away ticket rules by a supporter.
The group also thanked Chief Business Officer David Bruce after Sunderland confirmed on Monday he will leave this summer. Non-executive director Tom Burwell has taken over as interim CEO, with a permanent appointment expected this summer. The group credited Bruce with improvements to matchday experience, retail and the club’s identity at the Stadium of Light.
