Sunderland and Newcastle head into Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park with their vast followings under the spotlight.
FBref reports that Newcastle rank eighth in the Premier League for average home attendance with 52,093, narrowly ahead of Sunderland in ninth on 46,323. Everton are seventh on 52,110.
Sunderland’s figure is more than 7,000 up on 2024/25, their best average since 2001/02 at 46,745, and the club’s fourth-highest on record.
Manchester United lead the division on 73,962, with West Ham United second on 62,454. Tottenham Hotspur continue to draw 60,900 despite a shock relegation fight. Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leeds United sit further back.
The Black Cats won the reverse fixture 1-0 at the Stadium of Light in mid-December, decided by Nick Woltemade’s own goal. St James’ Park is renowned for a raucous home backing, and Sunderland’s away support is similarly vocal as the rivals meet again.
