Sunderland and Newcastle United’s last five derbies before St James Park clash

Sunderland aim to extend their strong league record over Newcastle United when the Tyne-Wear derby is staged at St James Park on Sunday.
According to Sunderland Echo, Regis Le Bris’s side have impressed in the Premier League with standout displays against Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. Here are the last five meetings.
April 2015: Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United, Premier League. Jermaine Defoe volleyed in from Steven Fletcher’s header to earn Dick Advocaat’s side the points.
October 2015: Sunderland 3-0 Newcastle United, Premier League. Fabricio Coloccini was sent off just before half-time for fouling Steven Fletcher, Adam Johnson converted the penalty, then Billy Jones and Fletcher struck after the break.
March 2016: Newcastle United 1-1 Sunderland, Premier League. With both clubs battling the drop, Defoe put Sunderland ahead at St James Park before Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled.
January 2024: Sunderland 0-3 Newcastle United, FA Cup Third Round. Newcastle secured a first derby win since August 2011 as a Dan Ballard own goal was followed early in the second half by Alexander Isak doubling the lead from Miguel Almiron’s pass, before Isak scored a penalty.
December 2025: Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United, Premier League. The Stadium of Light meeting was settled by an own goal from Magpies club record signing Nick Woltemade.
