Sunderland have urged supporters to help make a historic European night the city can take pride in, with plans for visiting AZ Alkmaar fans set to affect access near the Stadium of Light.

The club said in a statement that a planned AZ supporters’ march will head to the ground from around 5.30pm, using the Keel Crossing, which may be closed briefly to allow it to pass safely.

People have been advised to expect a short delay at that time, and the crossing will reopen as soon as it is safe.

Fans have been asked to welcome visitors and enjoy the occasion responsibly, respect fellow and visiting supporters, players, staff and match officials, follow instructions from stewards, police and other matchday staff, avoid risky behaviour, and help create a passionate but welcoming atmosphere.

Wednesday’s UEFA Europa League tie opens Sunderland’s campaign, and a capacity crowd is expected on Wearside as European football returns after 53 years.
