Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has eased fitness fears, saying his half-time withdrawal in Switzerland’s 4-3 defeat to Germany was planned rather than a setback.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 33-year-old missed five club matches with an ankle issue but has since started the last two, including a 2-1 win at Newcastle United at St James' Park.

He began the friendly against Germany but was replaced at the interval with the score 2-2, and Germany eventually won 4-3. Some continental analysis suggested Switzerland appeared less organised after he went off.

Xhaka said the change had been agreed in advance and reiterated there was no setback. He added that others can judge the impact of his absence, and that the team learned plenty, praising Germany’s composure under pressure.

Head coach Murat Yakin said he was in close contact with his captain and not worried, adding they would decide together how long Xhaka plays. He also noted Switzerland have not faced a side of Germany’s calibre for almost two years, which limited their chance to play their usual game.
