Sunderland are close to landing Thomas Meunier, with the Belgium international due on Wearside for a medical after a two-year agreement was reached. Subject to no late hitches, the 34-year-old right-back is expected to sign within 24 hours.
According to The Athletic, Meunier flew into Newcastle on Tuesday morning to complete the formalities of a move to the Stadium of Light.
The defender is a free agent after his Lille contract expired, having spent the 2025-26 season with the French club. His arrival would be Sunderland’s first senior signing of the summer and add significant experience to Régis Le Bris’ squad ahead of the club’s return to European football.
Meunier has represented Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Club Brugge, Trabzonspor and Lille. He has Champions League pedigree and has been capped more than 60 times by Belgium.
He began his career further forward before establishing himself as a right-back, and his attacking contribution remains a feature of his game. He won domestic honours in Belgium and France, including league titles with Club Brugge and PSG.
Sunderland already have Trai Hume and Nordi Mukiele on the right side of defence. Meunier’s expected arrival would offer another experienced, tactically flexible option, with Hume also used higher up the pitch.
The medical is the final major hurdle before the deal can be completed and announced. Sunderland hope to conclude the move quickly as preparations continue for their opening pre-season friendly at York City.
