Sunderland contract latest: Who could leave for free this summer? | OneFootball

Sunderland have a raft of contract calls looming this summer and into 2027, with expiries and a loan to resolve. The window is closed, but work behind the scenes continues.

According to Sunderland Echo, players who could depart for free this summer include Simon Moore, Bertrand Traore, loanee Lutsharel Geertruida from RB Leipzig, Dennis Cirkin, Dan Neil and Harrison Jones.

Geertruida’s loan ends in the summer and a permanent return is unclear, which seems less likely after Liverpool’s shock January interest. Traore signed a one-year deal, he leads Sunderland players with 100+ minutes for successful dribbles per 90 at two, and is second overall on 14, yet his bit-part impact and inconsistency make an extension unlikely.

Neil left on loan for Ipswich Town in January and is already confirmed to be leaving this summer. Jones and Moore will surely leave. Cirkin’s future is less clear, the left-back has made only seven appearances across all competitions this season, but at 23, and an academy graduate, he offers cheap depth and room to improve.

The decision may rest on whether he accepts a back-up role or pursues regular minutes elsewhere. Looking further ahead, four players’ deals expire in summer 2027, most notably defenders Reinildo Mandava and Luke O’Nien. Reinildo has been ever-present when fit at left-back since arriving from Atletico Madrid last summer and, despite turning 33 next season, he will expect an extension on current form.

O’Nien was integral to Sunderland’s promotion and is a club stalwart, but has played just 21 minutes of Premier League football this season. If that does not change, he may well seek an exit in the summer.
