Sunderland are braced for a summer of contract decisions and are waiting on Dan Ballard’s fitness for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Arsenal centre-back has been integral over the last 12 months and has coped against Premier League strikers this season. His performances earned the North East Football Writers Player of the Year award at Ramside Hall earlier this month.
That accolade arrived after he signed a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light, ending talk of a move away from Wearside.
Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Ballard embodies the club’s identity, has grown into a Premier League defender and a dressing-room leader, and that his commitment reflects Sunderland’s ambition.
Despite Ballard’s renewal, work remains as nine players are out of contract this summer, with some holding options to extend. A further seven will enter the final 12 months of their deals, increasing the risk of cut-price departures.
The picture sets up a hectic close season, with decisions looming across the squad.
