Sunderland fans hail ‘masterpiece’ 1937-inspired home shirt as collar, crest and black socks win praise | OneFootball

Unveiled on Tuesday, Sunderland’s 1937-inspired home shirt has drawn a largely glowing response from supporters. According to Sunderland Echo, the Hummel design nods to the club’s 1937 FA Cup-winning strip and goes on sale at 8am on Wednesday.

Traditional red-and-white stripes are paired with a button-up collar, a retro crest and black shorts and socks. Early reaction focused on those heritage touches, with many already ranking it among Hummel’s best.

Fans praised Sunderland and Hummel for embracing the club’s history, while others went as far as calling the release a masterpiece, singling out the badge, the collar, a rear crest detail and the switch to black socks.

The collar proved a particular hit. Tom Wilcock highlighted it as the standout element, and Jake Collinson felt the pop-button approach made for a solid, tidy look.

Some suggested it could edge last season’s Championship home shirt as their favourite Hummel design, while others felt it might become an all-time classic.

The return of black shorts and socks also landed well, with one account imagining how sharp the kit will look under the lights against Italian teams. Another linked the design, and the recent Elvis release, to Sunderland’s return to European football, hoping it might bring good luck in the Premier League and in Europe.

There were dissenting notes. One fan felt the crest should have matched the original 1937 blue, while another preferred last season’s range, disliked the pink top and thought the badge undermined the look.
