Sunderland held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light, returning to Premier League action with a composed display.
According to Sunderland Echo, Regis Le Bris’s side controlled long spells and were denied by some excellent Senne Lammens saves, while the visitors’ late pressure yielded few chances.
Goalkeeper Robin Roefs had little shot-stopping to do against a flat United side, stayed calm in possession and made a decent late save from Cunha, earning a rating of six.
Lutsharel Geertruida justified his recall, solid before the break then increasingly influential after it, repeatedly arriving in threatening areas and striking the post with his weaker left foot for a deserved eight.
Back in the centre, Nordi Mukiele was composed on the ball and, though United rarely threatened, he stepped in decisively when required, also rated eight.
Omar Alderete’s passing was not always crisp, yet he defended stoutly and got the better of his duel with Zirkzee, taking a seven.
