Sunderland are in talks with Eyüpspor over a potential move for 22-year-old striker Ahmed Abdullahi.
Sunderland Echo understands that Abdullahi was left out of Régis Le Bris’ first-team squad. Sunderland beat York City 5-1 in Saturday’s pre-season friendly, and the forward instead turned out for the under-21s against South Shields, a sign of his current standing.
The Nigerian joined from Belgian side Gent in August 2024 on a four-year contract. A run of injuries has so far prevented him from making a competitive senior appearance.
Abdullahi previously spent trial spells with Marseille and Borussia Dortmund in 2021 before signing for Gent. He has represented Nigeria at under-20 level and was selected for the 2023 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
His pathway into Le Bris’ senior side appears limited, with Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor among the options ahead of him. Young forward Trey Ogunsuyi has also featured in pre-season, while additional Premier League, domestic cup and European fixtures could open chances across the wider squad.
A switch to Eyüpspor could offer Abdullahi regular senior football after a frustrating spell on Wearside. No agreement has been finalised, and the Turkish club are exploring a deal.
