Sunderland are in discussions with Turkish Super Lig club Eyüpspor over a potential move for striker Ahmed Abdullahi. Sunderland Echo understands talks are continuing and no agreement has been reached.
The 22-year-old was left out of Régis Le Bris' first-team group for Saturday's 5-1 pre-season win at York City. He instead featured for Sunderland's under-21s against South Shields, a pointer to his current standing.
Abdullahi joined from Belgian side Gent in August 2024 on a four-year deal. A run of injuries has so far prevented a competitive senior appearance for the Black Cats.
He previously attracted interest from leading European clubs, spending time on trial with Marseille and Borussia Dortmund in 2021 before signing for Gent. The striker has represented Nigeria at under-20 level and was selected for the 2023 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
His route to first-team minutes appears limited, with Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor among the options ahead of him under Le Bris. Young forward Trey Ogunsuyi has also featured in pre-season, and Sunderland's Premier League, domestic cup and European schedules could open minutes across the wider squad. Eyüpspor are exploring a deal that could give Abdullahi regular senior football after a frustrating spell on Wearside.
