Sunderland are exploring attacking reinforcements this summer, with Kerim Alajbegović and Mariano Troilo among those linked, while Liverpool’s stance on Lutsharel Geertruida could yet aid their plans.
Geertruida joined Sunderland on loan from RB Leipzig in September 2025 and became a key figure under Régis Le Bris, making 30 appearances and logging 1,865 minutes. Liverpool had weighed a January move while Conor Bradley was injured and Jeremie Frimpong had fitness issues, but Slot’s exit and Andoni Iraola’s arrival have changed the picture. According to Voetbal International, there is currently no contact between Liverpool and Geertruida, which could strengthen Sunderland’s hand if they pursue a permanent deal.
Sunderland are reportedly among the clubs keeping tabs on Alajbegović after an eye-catching 2025-26 with Red Bull Salzburg, where the 18-year-old made 44 appearances, scoring 13 with four assists. He is said to be open to a switch to Italy, and Leverkusen are yet to respond. The Black Cats are said to be among the English clubs furthest ahead in monitoring the situation, though any deal would be ambitious given the level of competition and the fee involved.
Fulham are reportedly ready to push ahead for Troilo, potentially increasing competition for Sunderland. The Parma centre-back impressed in Serie A after stepping up following Giovanni Leoni’s departure, making 23 appearances and scoring the winner against AC Milan at the San Siro.
Former Sunderland winger Jack Diamond is attracting interest after a strong spell with Stockport County. Portsmouth and Lincoln City are said to be watching the 26-year-old, who has become one of League One’s more productive wide players.
