The summer was transformative after the play-off final win over Sheffield United, with Robin Roefs, Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra among the arrivals. Momentum from Wembley carried into a campaign that has featured wins over Chelsea, Leeds United and Newcastle United as they chase Europe.

January was more restrained, with Simon Adingra loaned to Monaco and several squad exits. Melker Ellborg, Nilson Angulo and Jocelin Ta Bi came in to deepen Regis Le Bris’ options.

Le Bris described the window as difficult but felt the club were in a good place, noting high standards and targeted recruitment, often in offensive roles that are hard to fill. He stressed Sunderland prefer to build rather than buy, backing young players with potential to grow.

With safety assured, attention turns to the summer window to add selectively to a solid core. This season’s progress has outstripped expectations and provided a platform to strengthen again.
