Sunderland Echo understands Sunderland have opted against triggering a one-year option in Harrison Jones’ contract, leaving the Academy of Light graduate free to depart this summer, and that at least five EFL clubs and two in the Scottish Premiership have already indicated they would discuss a deal.

Jones made his senior debut in August 2024, coming on for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup first-round defeat to Preston North End. He has since made six further first-team appearances.

Two of those came as starts under Regis Le Bris during the final month of last season’s promotion push to the Premier League. That followed, by over a year, his first senior start in an FA Cup third-round defeat to Stoke City, which he called a dream come true.

This season his senior action has been limited to a Carabao Cup start in the August loss to Huddersfield Town. He was an unused substitute in 12 Premier League games and was on the bench for last month’s Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle.

A January loan was explored before an injury in a Premier League International Cup tie against Borussia Dortmund curtailed plans. Since returning, Jones has captained the Under-21s and struck a fine free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County earlier this week, with scouts in attendance.
