Sunderland’s late push for Europe faltered with a 1-1 draw at already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Opta’s latest projection has Regis Le Bris’ side finishing 12th on 50.38 points, with Arsenal top on 82.26 and Manchester City second on 79.32.
Sunderland led just after the quarter-hour when Nordi Mukiele headed in. The contest turned when Dan Ballard was controversially sent off beyond the midway point of the first half for an alleged hair pull on Tolu Arokodare.
Wolves levelled nine minutes after the restart, Santiago Bueno met a Hugo Bueno corner and guided a header past Robin Roefs.
They are three points off the top seven with home games against Manchester United and Chelsea and a trip to Everton still to come over the final three weeks.
The projection places Manchester United third, Aston Villa fourth and Liverpool fifth. Brighton are sixth, with Bournemouth seventh ahead of Brentford, Chelsea and Fulham, Everton 11th and Newcastle 13th, while Wolves are forecast to finish 20th.
