Sunderland have sold a majority stake in their women’s team to US multi-club group Bay Collective.

Backed by investment firm Sixth Street, Bay Collective will add Sunderland as its second club alongside Bay FC. According to Sunderland Echo, the deal, agreed after almost a year of talks, still requires approval from the relevant authorities.

Sunderland keep a minority share to protect the club’s identity, values and intellectual property. The women’s side will continue at the Academy of Light and be run in partnership with the wider club.

Interim CEO Tom Burwell called it a significant step after assessing several options, citing Bay Collective’s global expertise, belief in the project and long term focus. The agreement forms part of the club’s global investment plan and will fund critical infrastructure upgrades across the club.

Bay Collective chief executive Kay Cossington emphasised a long-term commitment to honouring Sunderland Women’s identity while supporting players, staff and the academy with tailored resources. She also aims to deepen links with fans and partners and build a platform for sustained success.

The partnership will prioritize strengthening the squad, staff, performance environments and academy, plus improvements to matchdays and operations. Sunderland are eighth in the WSL 2 with two games left, and fresh investment is viewed as key to closing the gap to the top and advancing Super League ambitions.
