Sunderland are set for a seven-figure boost this summer, with a record 12 players at the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

According to Sunderland Echo, FIFA’s expanded Club Benefit Programme will deliver a healthy payout. Around €350 million will be distributed, with €100 million for the qualification period and an estimated €2,362 per player for each qualifier matchday. Regulars Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete are thought to have earned the club close to €20,000.

A further €250 million is reserved for the finals. Sunderland’s strong representation should secure more income, though individual shares are likely to be slightly lower than at Qatar 2022 due to the 48-team group stage.

Xhaka, Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are with Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador. Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku are with DR Congo, Chemsdine Talbi is with Morocco, and Simon Adingra is with Ivory Coast. Robin Roefs, Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are in the Netherlands squad, while Wilson Isidor is with Haiti.

Talbi came off the bench in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil, and Adingra was an unused substitute in Ivory Coast’s 1-0 win over Ecuador.

Brobbey was a late substitute in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan. Paraguay lost heavily to the USA and Haiti were edged by Scotland, while others have made solid starts.

Sunderland are guaranteed payments for all 12 across the just over a fortnight long group stage and the preparation period. With FIFA estimating €5,000 per day per player, three weeks’ duty equates to about €105,000 per player and roughly £940,000 in total.

That figure will almost certainly rise above £1,000,000 once qualification payouts and any progression are added. The top two in each group advance, along with the eight best third-placed teams. Diarra is set to make his bow against France on Tuesday, with DR Congo facing Portugal on Wednesday.
