Sunderland are preparing for the summer transfer window, aiming to add further quality to a squad that impressed on their Premier League return.
The Premier League have confirmed the window opens on Monday, June 15, four days after the World Cup starts with Mexico facing South Africa, and it will close on Monday, August 31 at 7pm.
Last summer, after their Championship play-off final win against Sheffield United, the Black Cats completed a string of eye-catching deals. The hit rate was high, with highly rated Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs, former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka and Dutch international Brian Brobbey all shining.
The club’s boss explained that a team of scouts monitor different leagues and meet every two or three months to assess targets, with Florent Ghisolfi able to challenge or support proposals. He said he thought they would be ready, while stressing the market remains unpredictable.
Ghisolfi said Sunderland will try to improve the squad this summer, although stability remains the priority. He added the club are focused on sustainability and do not need to sell because of Premier League revenues, though sales may occasionally happen to reflect player cycles and to show a pathway for ambitious young signings, without pressure to sell.
