SportDog reports that Sunderland have shown interest in Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza following the World Cup last 16 defeat to France, settled by a Kylian Mbappe penalty. The 24-year-old was at the centre of post-match debate.
Paraguay’s XI included current Black Cats player Omar Alderete and former Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron. Gustavo Alfaro’s side were accused of 'dark arts' as they tried to disrupt France.
France head coach Didier Deschamps declined to criticise the referee or Paraguay, though he noted his team finished with three bookings. He said he could do without the insults and stressed the key point was qualification and the lack of incidents at full-time.
Galarza was singled out after a first-half clash with the match winner Mbappe, which BBC pundit Joe Hart felt could have warranted a red card.
Galarza plays for CA Talleres and previously spent two years at Genk, featuring in qualifiers for the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.
Olympiakos and Getafe are said to be leading the race, with Monza and Strasbourg also keen, and the midfielder has more than two years left on his Talleres deal.
