Sunderland seized on their Tyne-Wear derby win by needling Newcastle United across social media, amplifying the post-match fallout. According to Sunderland Echo, the club leant into the moment online.
Newcastle had the ideal start at St James’s Park when Anthony Gordon scored early. Sunderland responded after the interval to turn the contest around and claim all three points, extending their rivals’ winless Premier League run in the fixture to 11 matches.
Frustration on Tyneside has intensified, with fresh scrutiny on Eddie Howe after consecutive derby defeats. The mood has shifted from the optimism that followed Carabao Cup success, and supporters appear split on the team’s direction.
Soon after full-time, Sunderland switched their cover image to travelling fans celebrating inside St James’s Park. The photo featured a banner reading “Eddie Howe’s black-and-white army”, a pointed nod towards the hosts.
They also posted a clip of Brian Brobbey’s winning goal set to Sam Fender’s Rein Me In, featuring Olivia Dean, a cheeky selection given Fender’s Newcastle allegiance. The video drew heavy engagement across platforms.
Howe said he remains fully committed despite the setback and growing external pressure. He described the Barcelona match as very tough and this defeat as even tougher, stressed he will shield his players, and accepted it will be a painful few days for him.
