Régis Le Bris has handed Nilson Angulo his full Sunderland debut against Liverpool, making one change from the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal as Chemsdine Talbi drops to the bench.

According to Sunderland Echo, Trai Hume continues in his hybrid role on the right and Noah Sadiki anchors midfield after being withdrawn as a precaution at Arsenal, with the midfielder fit to start.

Le Bris had hinted before the game that Angulo was ready, highlighting his minutes this year at a strong level, European experience and ability to play wide or as a wing-back. He stressed the winger’s work both in and out of possession and said Sunderland are prepared to give opportunities when players are in a good place.

For Liverpool, Arne Slot has selected Wataru Endo at right back ahead of Curtis Jones to cover the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai. Joe Gomez is fit to return but is named on the bench.

Le Bris also said Xhaka and Traore face at least another fortnight out, describing their recoveries as symptom-led and hoping for good news in a few weeks. He explained one had a significant knee issue, featured for his national side in the second half, and that Sunderland chose not to rush the process to protect the rest of the season and the player’s career.
