Wrexham are attempting to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with both permanent and loan options under consideration.

According to reports, the 26-year-old could be available for around £7m, with Wrexham open to a fee but favouring a straight loan or an initial loan with an option or obligation to buy. The price has discouraged Rangers, and Wolverhampton Wanderers would need to move a goalkeeper before making an approach.

Patterson is expected to leave this summer after dropping behind Robin Roefs in Sunderland’s pecking order. He has returned to the Academy of Light and is training with the senior goalkeepers while his future is resolved.

Millwall want to bring him back to The Den after a successful loan in the second half of last season. He joined the Lions in February having made only one senior appearance for Sunderland earlier in the campaign.

Patterson first sat on the senior bench in 2018-19 and made his debut in an EFL Trophy tie at Fleetwood in November 2020. A loan at Notts County followed in 2021-22 before a recall amid injuries, and he then became first choice, playing through the League One play-offs as Sunderland beat Wycombe at Wembley to end four years in the third tier. Three years later he made key saves against Sheffield United at Wembley as Sunderland recovered to win 2-1 and clinch promotion to the Premier League.
