Sunderland could face a summer fight with Rangers for FC Metz right-back Koffi Kouao, who is set to be out of contract. Media Foot reports the Black Cats’ interest dates back to early December.
Reports also say Rangers are seeking a player of Kouao’s profile, and an unnamed Bundesliga club have already opened talks.
Kouao, 27, a former Ivory Coast youth international, joined Metz from Vizela in 2022 and has since made 113 appearances in all competitions, scoring three and assisting eight.
This term he has two Ligue 1 goals and one assist, plus an average of 1.18 successful dribbles and 7.34 defensive contributions per 90 minutes, per FotMob. Metz are bottom and one result from confirmed relegation.
His deal expires this summer and he has already said he will not renew at Stade Saint-Symphorien. Speaking to L’Equipe, he reflected on four seasons of highs and lows, called it an honour, and targeted a strong finish over the final three matches.
Sunderland have used Trai Hume, Lutsharel Geertruida and Nordi Mukiele at right-back this season. Mukiele has also filled in centrally and Geertruida’s loan ends this summer, with no update on a permanent move. With that in mind, Regis Le Bris will be anxious to add cover and competition for Hume, and Kouao could provide it.
