Sunderland have intensified their move for Toulouse left back Dayann Mathalie, with their first bid, about £17 million, turned down, L’Equipe reports.
They have made headway with the player, with RMC reporting an agreement on a five-year contract. A deal between the clubs is not yet in place, and Toulouse want a bumper fee.
Toulouse have already sold striker Emersonn to Ipswich Town for around £24 million plus £3.5 million in add-ons. They are believed to be seeking more than that to part with Mathalie after a breakout season of 31 appearances.
Left back is a key focus for Sunderland after Dennis Cirkin’s departure earlier this summer, leaving Reinildo as the only senior option in Régis Le Bris’s squad.
The Black Cats also aim to add a right winger following Bertrand Traoré’s exit, while a left-sided centre back and extra attacking depth are being explored. The club maintain they will prioritise quality over quantity.
