Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland have activated the 12-month option in Jenson Jones’ contract, which would keep the defender at the club until at least the summer of 2027.
The 19-year-old signed his first professional deal in July 2024, running to the summer of 2026 with an additional year attached.
Jones joined Sunderland at the age of six and has come through the age groups to become a regular for the U21s. Considered a versatile option, he can operate at full-back or in central midfield and has had increasing exposure under Régis Le Bris.
He featured in pre-season and made his senior competitive debut at the start of the campaign, playing 45 minutes in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield Town. Since then he has been named on the bench seven times in the Premier League and twice in the FA Cup.
A notable moment came in March’s derby at St James’ Park, when a stretched squad saw Jones included among the substitutes against Newcastle United. With senior options thin, he was one injury or suspension from a potential call-up.
At U21 level, he made seven appearances in the Premier League Cup, including the final against Burnley at the Stadium of Light. He also featured in Premier League 2, the National League Cup and the Premier League International Cup, collecting regular minutes across competitions.
