Sunderland Women took a deserved point against Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, having led for around an hour. They even threatened a stoppage-time winner, a result that would have capped a statement display.
According to Sunderland Echo, the North East dynamic has shifted from the old Durham rivalry since Newcastle’s Saudi Arabia PIF-backed takeover, and Sunderland had lost all three league derbies since promotion to WSL 2. The visitors’ resources showed, with Jordan Nobbs starting in midfield and fellow former Lioness Demi Stokes only on the bench, yet this felt a step forward for Mel Reay’s side.
Sunderland were clinical in the first half, Katy Watson’s first-time volley finding the far corner. Out of possession they were tireless, snapping into duels, winning 50-50s and keeping Newcastle at arm’s length despite long spells without the ball.
They will regret a 15-minute spell after the break when they tired and sank too deep, inviting the pressure that brought an inevitable equaliser. Late on a long throw was flicked on for Eleanor Dale, who headed agonisingly over.
The draw felt fair, but it also stopped the derby rot and could have big regional ramifications. Newcastle dropped points they really needed and are now three points off the promotion play-off place with three games remaining, which might help keep this derby on next season’s calendar.
Given the scale of investment, it is a matter of when, not if, Newcastle reach the Super League. Sunderland, who have spent much of the past year exploring external investment, can take heart from the display, with 19-year-old Chloe Paxton outstanding at centre half on full debut and Watson continuing her rise. A strong academy and robust out-of-possession structure have underpinned their last five years and remain central to what comes next.
