Sunderland are preparing for a crucial summer window ahead of Europa League involvement, with a 2025/26 net spend of £135m ranking sixth in the Premier League.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Stadium of Light hierarchy sanctioned an ambitious overhaul after the play-off final win over Sheffield United and the exits of Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson. That victory triggered a permanent deal for loan signing Enzo Le Fee that set a club record, surpassed within weeks by the capture of Habib Diarra.
Further arrivals included former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, Paraguay international Omar Alderete and Dutch trio Robin Roefs, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey before the window shut.
January brought goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo and Ivorian youngster Jocelin Ta Bi. Sunderland finished seventh.
2025/26 Premier League net spend: Arsenal £243m loss, Liverpool £227m loss, Manchester City £168m loss, Tottenham Hotspur £158m loss, Manchester United £149m loss, Sunderland £135m loss, Everton £101m loss, Nottingham Forest £97m loss, Leeds United £92m, Newcastle United £89m loss, Burnley £84m loss, Fulham £49m loss, West Ham United £46m loss, Crystal Palace £41m loss, Aston Villa £11m loss, Chelsea £4m loss, Brentford £44m profit, Brighton and Hove Albion £55m profit, Wolverhampton Wanderers £70m profit, Bournemouth £112m profit.
The window opens on Monday. The coming months will be less hectic than last summer, although preparing for Europe means the squad will have to be bolstered.
