Sunderland open at newly promoted Ipswich in late August, then host Fulham, visit Brentford, welcome Arsenal and travel to Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City.

According to Sunderland Echo, Sky Sports will show the Fulham match, now a two pm kick-off on Sunday, August 30. TNT will air the Arsenal game on Saturday, September 12, an eight pm start at the Stadium of Light.

2025/26: Sunderland 3-0 West Ham United. Promotion heroes Dan Ballard, Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor scored, against opponents relegated that season.

2016/17: Manchester City 2-1 Sunderland. Pep Guardiola’s first Premier League match ended with a late Paddy McNair own goal deciding it.

2015/16: Leicester City 4-2 Sunderland. Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher netted, but Riyad Mahrez struck twice and Jamie Vardy plus Marc Albrighton sealed a win that launched Claudio Ranieri’s title triumph.

2014/15: West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Sunderland. Lee Cattermole’s fine opener was overturned by Saido Berahino’s brace before a late Seb Larsson equaliser.

2013/14: Sunderland 0-1 Fulham. Pajtim Kasami’s solitary goal settled a low-key opener on Wearside.

2012/13: Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland. With Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud debuting after Robin Van Persie’s exit, Arsenal were held at the Emirates.

2011/12: Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland. Luis Suarez, having missed a penalty earlier, put Liverpool ahead, then a superb Seb Larsson volley earned a point.

2010/11: Sunderland 2-2 Birmingham City. Lee Cattermole saw red for two bookings, Darren Bent’s penalty and a Stephen Carr own goal made it 2-0, before late efforts from Liam Ridgewell and Scott Dann levelled.

2009/10: Bolton Wanderers 0-1 Sunderland. Record signing Darren Bent struck after five minutes on debut to give Steve Bruce a winning start.

2008/09: Sunderland 0-1 Liverpool. Fernando Torres hit a late winner at the Stadium of Light.
